Officials from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)is investigating a fatal shipyard crane accident that occurred on October 25 in California, according to NBC News. Mark Arnett, 51, was a shipyard worker for Ports America at the Port of Oakland and was working on a crane atop a trolley at the time of the accident. He somehow became pinned between the trolley and guardrail and was crushed. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital; where he died from his injuries.
“It [the trolley] wasn’t traveling smoothly or correctly,” said OSHA representative Peter Melton. Operation at the shipyard was suspended voluntarily following an investigation.
“Ports America is extremely saddened by this tragedy,” read a statement released by Ports America. “We extend are [sic] deepest sympathy to his family. The safety of our employees is of the utmost importance to us.”
