Shipyard Worker Killed in Crane Accident

Officials from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)is investigating a fatal shipyard crane accident that occurred on October 25 in California, according to NBC News. Mark Arnett, 51, was a shipyard worker for Ports America at the Port of Oakland and was working on a crane atop a trolley at the time of the accident. He somehow became pinned between the trolley and guardrail and was crushed. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital; where he died from his injuries.

“It [the trolley] wasn’t traveling smoothly or correctly,” said OSHA representative Peter Melton. Operation at the shipyard was suspended voluntarily following an investigation.

“Ports America is extremely saddened by this tragedy,” read a statement released by Ports America. “We extend are [sic] deepest sympathy to his family. The safety of our employees is of the utmost importance to us.”

OSHA will determine if the crane and trolley were both working properly. Employers must protect workers at all costs, particularly in high-risk industries such as this. If you or a loved one has been injured on the job, please contact our firm for a free consultation.
