What Are The Hazards Of Handling Chemicals?

Extremely hazardous chemicals are involved in a number of industries, such as polymer manufacturing and petroleum refining. At the most basic level, employers should educate their workers on the nature of the chemicals they handle, so that their workers can abide by proper safety procedures in the event of an emergency.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently inspected the Marietta, Ohio-based Solvay Specialty Polymers. OSHA inspectors found that Solvay Specialty Polymers exposed its workers to chemicals that can cause serious central nervous system damage if inhaled.

“The plant needs to ensure all equipment and processes receive the proper evaluation and scrutiny before the use of these highly hazardous chemicals. Workers must be trained to handle these chemicals safely,” said the OSHA area director in Columbus. “Process safety management programs are designed to prevent the catastrophic release of highly hazardous chemicals and to prevent workers from being exposed to these harmful chemicals.”
