Fast food workers are at risk for several types of work injuries and illnesses. Perhaps one of the worst threats that fast food workers face is the prospect of suffering third-degree burns. Although the accident we are about to discuss did not occur in Ohio, it is still an excellent example of how fast food employees work around dangerous equipment. It also shows that fast food injuries can have life-changing consequences.
How Do Fast Food Injuries Affect Workers?
A work accident at a Church’s Chicken in Texas left several workers with severe third-degree burns. Witnesses to the accident report seeing the floor collapse, and the deep fryer tilting forward and pouring boiling grease on top of three workers. All three workers sustained third-degree burns. One of the workers received third-degree burns over 75 percent of her body. For all of the workers, these are life-changing injuries.
Burn injuries in fast food restaurants are extremely common across the country. In some cases, employers do not take them seriously. Last year, a McDonald’s employee described how she received a third-degree burn on her forearm. According to the worker, her manager told her to apply mustard to the burn. After working through the pain for several hours, she was rushed to the hospital and put on morphine. She ended up missing work for three weeks, and then going on medical leave for six months.
Workers who suffer injuries may have options to file for workers’ compensation or other benefits. These benefits can help pay for lost income and medical expenses.
