Republic Steel Fined Again for Willful Violations of OSHA Regulations

OSHA cited Republic Steel in Lorain for 24 safety violations. The citations carry with them $1.1 million in fines. This is the second time in less than two years that Republic Steel has faced trouble with OSHA for safety violations.

A formal complaint was sent to OSHA by the United Steelworkers alleging Republic Steel has inadequate fall protection and lacks other protections at its plants. The agency opened a formal investigation in February. OSHA found there was a lack of fall protection on runway girders, exposing workers to the risk of 66-foot falls.

In 2011, after a worker was seriously injured in a fall at the company’s Lorain location, OSHA cited Republic Steel for seven willful violations and three repeat violations. This time around, Republic Steel was cited for 15 willful violations. Republic Steel has been in OSHA’s severe-violator enforcement program since 2011.
