The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is handing out penalties to Canton Drop Forge in Canton for multiple violations, according to a report released by OSHA. One serious violation was reported as well as three repeat infractions. A 31-year-old worker died after being struck by a truck on April 22 at the company’s facility in Canton. A cable broke on the loader bucket on the truck, and the worker—who was underneath at the time—was crushed by the falling bucket.
Canton Drop Forge is cited for failure to provide machine guarding and operating equipment with a damaged control panel, a non-working limit switch and a push button that was not working properly. They face penalties up to $89,000.
“Canton Drop Forge has a responsibility to ensure its equipment is operationally safe and that workers are properly trained,” says Howard Eberts, Cleveland’s OSHA director. “Worker’s should never be required to use faulty equipment and risk their lives to earn a paycheck. This terrible incident should have been prevented.”
Fatal accidents at job sites is an issue in Ohio. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, fatal accidents increased 14% from 2009 to 2010.
