National Steel City identified the victim of a fatal construction accident at their facility in Alabama, according to AL.com. Michael Wilson, a 53-year-old construction worker from Flowery Branch, Georgia, fell 85 feet to his death, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. The death has been ruled an accident for now.
“No one pushed him and he didn’t jump,” says Lori Myles, sheriff’s office representative. “We were there to investigate whether any suspicious acts had occurred, and we found none.”
Just because the death is not a homicide, that does not mean that no one is liable. The sheriff’s office did not know whether Wilson was wearing a harness. The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is launching an investigation into the accident and working conditions, although it may take months to complete.
National Steel City is a contractor based out of Michigan that specializes in the steel and power industry. Their OSHA track record was unavailable. Work at the site is expected to resume. If Wilson did not in fact have fall protection, National Steel City can expect hefty fines from OSHA.
