The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has hit Formed Fiber Technologies LLC, a company that produces interior trimmings for motor vehicles, with its third citation for persistent amputation risks due to exposed moving machine parts. The two willful violation citations total $140,000 in penalties. A willful violation occurs when a company knowingly disregards employee safety or health.
Formed Fiber Technologies and OSHA have been at odds since October of 2013, when the company was cited 11 times for similar employee safety problems. The company settled the issue with OSHA for $69,000 and a guarantee that the amputation hazards would be corrected.
However, Formed Fiber Technologies allegedly violated the agreement with false documentation and claims that the issues with its exposed machinery had been fixed. OSHA penalized the company for $816,500 in response, a penalty that Formed Fiber Technologies has been adamant about fighting.
Any company that intentionally ignores safety rules subjects its employees to risks of severe injury or even death.
