The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety recently held a meeting to overhaul workplace safety rules relating to temporary workers. Temporary workers have high rates of workplace accidents
due to poor training and negligent employers.
The meeting made recommendations to improve research, compliance assistance and enforcement of workplace safety practices for temporary workers. OSHA has clarified that it is a joint responsibility between host employers and staffing agencies to ensure temporary workers are well-trained and given a safe environment to work in.
This is not the first time OSHA has toughened regulations to prevent workplace accidents among temporary workers. In 2013, the organization launched a nationwide campaign to ensure employers were complying with OSHA regulations that were created to protect temporary workers.
Why Is Workplace Safety An Important Issue For Temporary Workers?
According to an article in the New York Times
, 42 percent of temporary workers have jobs in light industry or warehouses, environments that can be dangerous if employers neglect workplace safety regulations.
In a study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine
, temporary employees have higher rates of injuries and more missed days of work. The injury rate for temporary workers is twice what it is for full time workers.

, Ohio has seen a rise in the number of temporary workers. Fortunately, temporary workers can receive workers’ compensation and disability benefits in the state of Ohio.
