A seafood supplier in Louisiana is looking at fines for safety violations at the hands of the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), according to the Wall Street Journal. C.J.’s Seafood Inc., located in Breaux Bridge, is a former seafood supplier for Wal-Mart.
OSHA cited the facility for a total of 11 serious safety violations, including blocked fire exits and electrical and chemical hazards. The facility also did not have the proper amount of fire extinguishers on site. In addition to these safety hazards, the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division discovered that the company did not fairly compensate overtime hours or even meet the minimum wage for 73 workers. They found C.J.’s to be in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
“It is imperative that employers comply with applicable laws that protect the health and safety of their workers,” said Dr. David Michael, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health. “Every worker deserves to go home safe at the end of a workday, and the employees at C.J.’s Seafood are entitled to nothing less.”
