OSHA Fines Dallas Grain Processing Facility

Southwest Feed Mills Inc. is facing federal fines for safety violations at its facility in Dallas, according to WorkersCompensation.com. Officials from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspected the facility in December 2011 as part of its Regional Emphasis Program on Grain Handling Facilities.

Violations include failure to provide fall protection equipment, failure to train workers properly on powered industrial trucks and failure to implement a procedure or system to control combustible dust. Proposed fines total $45,000.

“Excessive amounts of fugitive grain dust at this grain handling facility expose workers to possible fires and explosions,” says Stephen Boyd, director of OSHA’s Dallas Area Office. “These violations demonstrate the company’s lax attitude toward protecting its workers from serious injuries at this facility. Employers must provide a safe and healthy work environment for their employees.”
