Regency Technologies, an electronics recycling facility in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, has been cited for exposing workers to cadmium. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has proposed fines of $66,000 for the violations, according to an OSHA regional news release.
Regency Technologies, which is also known as RSR Partners, was cited for both health and safety violations, including 10 serious violations and one other-than-serious violation. Eight of the serious violations concerned OSHA’s standards on exposure to cadmium, such as:
Lack of personal protective equipment
Overexposure
Failing to establish regulated areas and changing rooms for cadmium exposure
Surface contamination
Lack of medical surveillance
Two of the serious violations Regency Technologies was cited for were health violations, including lack of hepatitis B vaccinations for blood borne pathogen exposure and failing to train workers in blood borne pathogen standards.
“Regency Technologies has a responsibility to protect workers from unique hazards found in its facility, such as cadmium, and to conduct the proper exposure and medical monitoring necessary to ensure that permissible exposure levels are not exceeded,” Kim Nelson, OSHA area director in Toledo told the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Public Affairs. “Exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects on the kidneys, lungs and bones.”
