One miner was killed and another was injured at a site near Huntington, Utah, on March 22 when a tunnel roof collapsed, according to NBC News. Rescue workers were able to save one other miner who was trapped at the site following the collapse. Elam Jones, 28, died in the accident and Dallen McFarlane was treated and released from Castleview Hospital.
The incident occurred at Rhino Mine in Utah, part of the Castle Valley Mining Complex. The Associated Press reported that Jones was preparing to begin his shift at Crandall Canyon in August 2007 when a cave-in at the section where he was going to work killed six workers and three rescue workers attempting to rescue survivors.
“I’ve had people come up to me and say, ‘How much more can one community take?’” said Huntington Mayor Hillary Gordon. “I guess we’ll take whatever gets dished out and take it one day at a time.”
The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) may probe what caused this collapse, although both OSHA and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) can regulate mine hazards.
