How Can My Business Protect Against Falling Hazards?

Those who work in the roofing and construction industries are well aware of the dangers of falling hazards. However, falling remains the leading cause of death in the construction industry. The United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is leading the charge against falling hazards with its new Stop Falls program. OSHA provides insight into the common causes of falls in a variety of industries and the ways in which workers and employers can prevent their occurrence.

To prevent falls while roofing, it is imperative that workers never disconnect from the lifeline. If a tool is out of reach because of the lifeline, take the time to readjust your rope instead of disconnecting it entirely. When installing skylights, do not use the empty patch of roof as a sitting area. Far too often, workers fall through empty skylights because they were dangling their legs through the hole. Most importantly, always check the integrity of ropes, harnesses and other protective equipment before climbing.
