High-Hazard Industry Forms OSHA Alliance

It is refreshing to see companies that work in a high-hazard industry, like Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Trust (EJATT), make a decision to form an alliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration preemptively, and not as a form of punishment. Far too often, companies in hazardous fields try and escape OSHA’s watchful eye at the expense of their own employees.

“The renewal of this alliance reflects the importance of electrical worker safety and health,” said the OSHA area director in Calumet City. “This alliance will continue to help develop effective training programs, while opening the lines of communication between OSHA, employers and workers.”

EJATT and OSHA will be collaborating on improving safety materials to prevent arc blasts and arc flashes, which can be deadly for electrical workers. OSHA will use EJATT’s inside knowledge of the electrical industry to develop and improve training materials.

OSHA alliances reduce the incidence of workplace injury, which in turn helps businesses keep their workers healthy. It is far more costly to deal with workers compensation lawsuits and medical bills than it is to maintain an environment where workers feel safe and secure.

Unfortunately, EJATT’s wise decision to form an alliance with OSHA is not indicative of the electrical industry as a whole. Many electrical workers face serious risk of electrical blasts and electrical arcs every day.
