Have You Suffered an Amputation Because of Your Job?

The iron casting company of San Cast Inc. was initially cited for exposing its workers to amputation and fall hazards after a worker suffered a leg amputation in June 2013. During a follow-up inspection in November, OSHA issued citations for 17 additional violations, Photo of an inspector

including the same amputation and fall hazards that were an issue before.

OSHA cited the company for repeat violations of failing to protect their employees from the ingoing nip point of belts, pulleys, chains and sprockets. They were also cited for a fall hazard pertaining to an unguarded platform.

OSHA issued new citations based on 11 serious safety violations, including:

  1. Lack of lockout/tagout procedures

  2. Exposing workers to struck-by hazards

  3. Failing to inspect cranes and hoists regularly

  4. Broken crane wires

Is My Company Doing All It Can to Protect Me?

San Cast Inc. was cited for several of these violations in both March and September 2013.

“San Cast continues to demonstrate a complete disregard for the health and safety of its workers by failing to correct known hazards,” Deborah Zubaty, OSHA’s area director in Columbus, stated. “No one should be risking injury on a job because their employer consistently fails to follow safety practices.”

Thousands of workers suffer amputations every year through a variety of activities and equipment. Employees can lose a body part through compression, crushing or getting stuck between objects.

OSHA guidelines were designed to protect workers from injury, but some companies are too focused on money and deadlines to comply, even after multiple citations.
