The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited Fiberdome Inc. for 10 violations. According to an OSHA news release, the violations carry with them $49,500 in proposed penalties and stem from a March investigation of Fiberdome’s Lake Mills, Wisconsin fiberglass manufacturing plant.
The March inspection was conducted after OSHA received information claiming workers at Fiberdome were experiencing respiratory irritation due to chemical exposure. During the inspection, it was discovered that the workers were being overexposed to styrene, which is a chemical used extensively in the manufacture of plastics, rubber and resins.
As a result of the inspection, Fiberdome was hit with 10 health violations, including other-than-serious, repeat and serious violations, such as:
Failing to develop a written respirator protection program and provide adequate respiratory protection and training to workers
Failing to properly label containers carrying hazardous chemicals
Failing to properly require workers to use appropriate hand protection when exposed to hazardous chemicals
“Workers at this manufacturing plant continue to be exposed to chemical hazards that can cause severe respiratory illness,” said Kim Stille, OSHA area director in Madison. “Companies must be aware of the hazards that exist in their facilities and take all possible precautions to minimize the risk of illness.”
Fiberdome’s actions signal an attitude of indifference when it comes to the safety of its workers. It is an attitude that no employer should have. However, like Fiberdome, putting the safety of its employees first is not the top priority of many companies.
