If you currently work in the manufacturing of storage and racking systems, you may be exposed to amputation hazards, depending on how concerned your employer is about workplace safety. Interlake Mecalux Inc. was recently inspected by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after a complaint by a worker at their Melrose-Park facility.
“Interlake Mecalux workers were exposed to dangerous hazards daily, putting them at risk of amputation due to a lack of required safeguards,” said the OSHA area director for the Chicago North Office in Des Plaines. “The company must identify and correct workplace hazards and provide workers with required safety training.”
Amputation is a common workplace injury. Sadly, 5,000 workers lost limbs in workplace accidents in 2012, according to OSHA. Interlake Mecalux failed to guard heavy machinery, protect workers from heavy moving machine parts during maintenance, instruct workers in energy control procedures and update procedures annually. In addition, the facility was littered with falling hazards, exposed circuitry and damaged extension cords.

OSHA fined Interlake Mecalux $71,700 for its blatant disregard for the welfare of its employees.
