A fitness center/gym located in Libertyville, Illinois may have to pay federal fines after exposing workers to hazardous chemicals, according to the Sun Times. The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued fines to Capital Fitness Inc., which operates the gym XSport Fitness as well as 20 other gyms throughout the state.
OSHA claims that the gym failed to provide personal protective equipment to employees working with hazardous chemicals. Proposed fines total $60,000. Capital Fitness has been cited in the past for similar violations.
“XSport Fitness has a responsibility to know the hazards that exist in their workplace and to provide employees with appropriate personal protective equipment,” said OSHA’s Diane Turek. “Employers who are cited for repeat violations demonstrate a lack of commitment to employee safety and health.”
“We are very concerned about the health and safety our employees and members,” said Capital Fitness Vice President Dennis Pierrot. “After all, we are a health club.”
