California Employee Cooked to Death at Seafood Facility

An employee at a Bumble Bee Foods seafood plant in California died in a tragic workplace accident, according to KTLA.com. The victim, 62-year-old Jose Malena, died on October 11 at the Bumble Bee Foods facility in Santa Fe Springs.

Police and rescuers arrived at the scene to find Malena dead inside of a steamer machine that is used in the food process. Paramedics declared him dead on the scene. Officials from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration in California (Cal-OSHA) are investigating the incident and possible conditions that led to the death.

Malena “was fatally injured when he was cooked in an oven,” said Cal-OSHA spokeswoman Erika Monterroza. Cal-OSHA will be thoroughly inspecting the facility for any hazardous conditions or safety violations that may have lead to the accident.

“The entire Bumble Bee Foods family is saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Malena family,” said Bumble Bee Foods spokesman Pat Menke.
