Ohio business owners that participated in the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation’s (BWC) safety council programs received $9.4 million in savings, according to a recent announcement by the BWC CEO, Steve Buehrer. There are a total of 78 safety councils under the umbrella of the BWC Division of Safety and Hygiene. Each council is composed of Ohio business owners who are charged with informing Ohio businesses about workplace safety, employee health, risk management and a variety of other topics surrounding occupational security.
“Safety councils are outstanding partners in BWC’s efforts to educate employers and workers about the importance of workplace safety,” said the BWC CEO. “We are pleased to award these employers that work hard to instill safety in their workplaces because they understand prevention is the single most important feature of an effective workplace safety program that keeps their workers safe on the job.”
Business owners who serve on safety councils receive a 2 percent premium rebate. Furthermore, those that reduce the incidence of workplace injuries by 10 percent receive an additional 2 percent premium rebate. Ohio businesses received $5 million in rebates for simple participation in the safety councils and approximately $4 million for improving the safety of work environments.
