OSHA Fines Pizza Manufacturer Following Workplace Accident

Palermo Villa Inc., a Milwaukee pizza manufacturing company, is facing federal fines following a workplace accident in which an employee lost three fingers, according to The Business Journal. Officials from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued seven safety violations to Palermo on May 7. OSHA had already began an inspection of the facility prior to this accident.

Some immigrant workers at the Palermo facility have been attempting to organize a union to improve working conditions.

“Dangerous working conditions at Palermo’s drove us to seek union recognition and the ability to address safety issues without fear of reprisal,” said Cesar Hernandez, a Palermo employee in a prepared statement. “Union representation would enable workers to establish our own workplace safety committees and address the safety issues we know are serious.”

Regardless of whether or not workers are represented by a union, all employees can report health and safety issues without fear of retaliation—they are guarded under whistleblower protection laws.
