OSHA Fines New Jersey Recycling Facility for Safety Violations

A New Jersey scrap metal recycling facility is looking at federal fines for safety violations, according to RecyclingToday.com. The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspected a Parkway Iron and Metal (Park Stein, Inc.) facility in Clifton, New Jersey and cited 16 serious violations. The proposed OSHA fines total $77,770.

The repeat violations include failure to provide employees with personal protective equipment, failure to conduct a hazard assessment of the workplace and failure to provide hazard training. These are some of the more serious safety violations.

“These violations leave employees vulnerable to hazards that can cause serious injury and possible death,” said Regional OSHA Director Lisa Levy. “It is vital that the company take the necessary steps to establish a safe and healthy work environment.”

The other serious violations relate to a lack of a hearing conservation program and failure to provide personal protective equipment to employees to prevent damage from long term exposure to high decibel levels. Park Stein Inc. has 15 business days to either agree to pay the fines or request a hearing with OSHA.
