The park is officially named McFerson Commons Park in honor of Andrew Jackson McFerson, who dedicated and funded the park as part of his commitment to the city. As a devoted community activist and philanthropist, McFerson gave much of his life to Columbus and its citizens. His legacy continues with the park being named in his honor and a statue of himself located in the center of the park. The park itself is composed of a variety of features.
