The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has determined that Hyatt Hotels Corp. employees are at risk for ergonomic strain as a result of heavy lifting and other tasks that come with housekeeping duties. OSHA sent Hyatt a letter in April addressing its concerns, according to the Chicago Tribune. Although the letter does not allege any safety violations, it warns about possible worker injury in the future.
The letter suggested strategies and improvements to lower the risks after OSHA inspected Hyatt hotels in Illinois and Texas. Hyatt insisted that there was no need to issue the risk citations to its employees.
“The health and well-being of our associates remain one of our top priorities and, as we always have,we will continue to work with our associates to ensure that we provide a safe, healthy workplace,” read a statement released by Hyatt.
Hyatt would be wise to heed the advice of OSHA. UniteHere, a union representing hospitality workers across the country, said it has received complaints from Hyatt employees about pains and injuries.
“Over time, lifting heavy mattresses and other cleaning activities can lead to debilitating injuries, surgery and even permanent disability,” read a statement issued by UniteHere.
