The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) and Consulate General of Mexico in Detroit formally signed an alliance on August 27. There was a ceremony to mark the occasion, which took place during National Labor Rights Week, August 26-31. The alliance is part of each organization’s efforts to protect workers—in this case, Mexican nationals.
The alliance was put in place to provide Mexican nationals with safety and health training and promote workers’ rights. It allows OSHA, MIOSHA and the Consulate to work together to give Mexican nationals in Michigan and northern Ohio guidance and training resources on workers’ rights, U.S. domestic law and OSHA standards.
“Labor Rights Week and the signing of this alliance are initiatives to educate Mexican nationals and other Spanish-speakers about workplace safety and health,” said Nick Walters, OSHA Regional Administrator in Chicago. “All workers in the United States deserve occupational safety training and protection from hazards.”
All workers do deserve to be educated about their rights and to have those rights protected. However, many workers still remain unaware of their rights and/or are the victims of rights violations by their employers.
