The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued six safety violations to Owens-Brockway Glass Container. OSHA has proposed $61,000 in penalties for the six safety violations, which were found as a result of a complaint inspection initiated in March, according to an OSHA news release.
Owens-Brockway Glass Container has 19 plants and is headquartered in Perrysburg, Ohio. The company produces glass containers for the food and beverage industry. The violations were discovered during an inspection of Owens-Brockway’s Zanesville, Ohio glass manufacturing plant.
Of the six violations, five were serious violations and one was a repeat violation. The five serious violations included:
The use of an electrical panel box that was not protected from water and damp conditions
Lack of an emergency eye washing station for exposure to corrosive materials
Nonworking emergency lighting
Failing to require the use of head protection for workers exposed to overhead hazards
Lack of fall protection for workers on open-sided platforms
The repeat violation was for a lack of signs marking exit directions, which an Owens-Brockway facility in Atlanta had been cited for in 2011.
“Owens-Brockway Glass Container has a responsibility to install properly working exit signs to protect workers on the job,” said Deborah Zubaty, OSHA area director in Columbus. “Employers who are cited for repeat violations demonstrate a lack of commitment to employee safety and health.”
Owens-Brockway’s employees deserve better. A company has a responsibility to provide its workers with a safe environment to ply their trade. Many employers, like Owens-Brockway, do not take that responsibility seriously, endangering the lives of their workers unnecessarily.
