A Wal-Mart Stores Inc. facility in Cobleskill, New York, was found to be in violation of federal safety regulations, according to OHSOnline.com. Officials from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspected the Wal-Mart Super Center store and found numerous violations, including blocked emergency exits, obstruction of storage areas, and the inability of employees to safely operate pallet jacks in aisles and passageways. Other violations included a lack of mounted fire extinguishers. OSHA had recently cited Wal-Mart for similar violations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Illinois, Ohio and Texas.
“The recurring nature of these hazards is disturbing and needs to be effectively addressed,” said regional OSHA director Kimberly Castillon. “An employer with multiple locations, such as Wal-Mart, needs to ensure that hazards are identified, corrected, and prevented at all of its workplaces.”
The proposed fines for Wal-Mart total $52,600. Fines of $48,200 are for three repeat violations and $4,400 for a serious violation for a lack of eye, face or hand protection.
“One step an employer can take to protect its workers against on-the-job hazards is to develop and maintain an effective illness and injury prevention program in which management and employees work together to proactively identify and prevent hazardous conditions,” says OSHA’s regional administrator Robert Kulick.
