Officials from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have proposed fines for a Tyson Foods Inc. facility in Nebraska, according to sources. A worker at the beef production facility was fatally injured last month after equipment he was servicing collapsed onto him when the chain holding it up gave way.
OSHA cited the facility for seven violations and proposed a $104,000 fine. One of the violations was listed as willfull for failure to make necessary modifications to the worker safety protection process. One would think that would be a high priority following a worker fatality.
“It is unthinkable that an employer would allow workers in and around dangerous operations without ensuring that sufficient safeguards are in place,” said regional OSHA administrator Charles E. Adkins. “All employers must take necessary steps to eliminate hazards from the workplace.”
