The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupation Safety and Health Admiistration fined an Ohio-based company for safety violation in Idaho City, Idaho, according to Occupational Health & Safety Online. A worker died after he was struck by a falling tree, according to reports. OSHA is expected to fine the Davey Tree Expert Co., based in Kent, Ohio $31,175 for safety violations.
“In this case, the employer failed to adhere to safe practices, which resulted in the death of an employee when he was struck by a falling tree,” said Dean Ikeda of OSHA. “The hazardous nature of tree clearing operations requires that employers take an aggressive and comprehensive stance toward workplace safety.”
The violations include failure to provide adequate first-aid supplies, failure to ensure that workers keep a safe distance from falling trees, failure to evaluate the work site prior to the tree being felled, failure to provide proper equipment training and failure to provide adequate training for determining tree length. The employee fatality was the second for the Davey Tree Expert Co. in 2011 after a similar incident in Pennsylvania on February 24.
