Kennebec Home Improvements, a construction company based in Maine, is facing fines at the hands of the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), according to the Kennebec Journal. OSHA officials inspected the Kennebec Home Improvement facility after a worker fatality earlier this year.
The death occurred when men were working on the foundation of a home; something went wrong, and the building fell on a worker. Another worker suffered a back injury in the collapse.
OSHA officials cited the facility for three serious safety violations and proposed a fine of $9,240. The violations were for failure to build a solid foundation for jacks, failure to secure the building and failure to properly train employees on how to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions.
“A competent person has to inspect the job site—the materials they’re using, the equipment they’re using—to make sure everything is in compliance,” said OSHA area director Bill Coffin. “They did not have that program in place.”
