The United States Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited a company in Atkinson, Nebraska on 16 safety violations, according to Safety.BLR.com. C.O. Grain, Inc. is charged with exposing working to dangerous conditions while dumping grains into bins.
The inspection follows complaints from local industry officials and workers about hazards of grain-handling facilities.
“Hazards associated with grain-handling are well-recognized within the grain industry and must be addressed,” said OSHA Regional Administrator Charles E. Adkins. “C.O. Grain failed to provide its employees with a safe and healthful environment.”
Three of the violations were “willful.” The citations including some for not locking out energy sources during bin entry, failure to test air quality and a lack of rescue equipment for employees as they enter the grain into the bin. The fines total $132,000.
