A Tenneco Automotive Operating Co. facility in Hartwell, Georgia has been cited for safety violations by the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), according to AccessNorthGa.com. OSHA inspected the facility and cited 16 violations, proposing a $79,300 fine.
The penalties include a failure to protect employees from exposure to hexavalent chromium, a dangerous and toxic chemical. Workers exposed to it may develop health problems or lung cancer, even many years after exposure. Other violations included tripping and fall hazards.
“Tenneco needs to take proactive steps to halt these safety and health hazards,” said Atlanta OSHA director William Fulcher. “OSHA will tolerate employers who fail in their duty to keep their workers safe.”
OSHA also cited Tenneco for problems with its record keeping in its OSHA log and allowing an extension cord to be used as permanent wiring.
