A Global Pyrotechnic Solutions Inc. facility near St. Louis will be facing federal fines for safety violations, according to STLToday.com. Officials from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigated the firework manufacturing facility after three workers were burned following an explosion on March 6. The explosion hospitalized the workers with serious burns—one for 20 days because of the severity of the burns.
OSHA cited a total of 31 violations, 25 classified as “serious.” Violations included improper handling and storage of explosives, improper ventilation and failure to properly train workers. Proposed fines total $116,900.
“It is imperative that employers who manufacture, sell, display or whose employees work around pyrotechnics recognize potential hazards and take steps to prevent injuries such as the ones that occurred in this case,” said Charles E. Adkins, an OSHA regional director in Kansas City. “All employers must take the necessary steps to eliminate hazards from the workplace.”
