A Toxco Inc. facility in Lancaster, Ohio is facing federal fines for numerous safety violations, according to the Norwalk Reflector. Officials from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) arrived to inspect the facility in February as part of its Site-Specific Targeting Program.
Toxco was identified as a company operating within an industry with high illness and injury rates. Toxco is based in California and has facilities throughout the United States and Canada. The facility in Lancaster is a battery recycling facility. Among the violations is a citation for failing to protect employees form overexposure to lead and cadmium. Proposed fines total $59,400.
"Employers, especially those in industries where there is an inherent risk, have an obligation to protect their workers from exposure to dangerous chemicals," said Deborah Zubaty, OSHA's Columbus Area Office director. "It is imperative that employers make the commitment to safety and health to ensure that employees are not continually exposed to hazards such as these."
These are very serious violations, and it is good that OSHA caught them when they did. A company that operates battery recycling facilities should know better.
