OSHA Cites Ohio Pallet Manufacturer for 20 Safety Violations

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has proposed $64,400 in penalties for a Sugarcreek, Ohio manufacturer. The penalties come as a result of 20 safety violations OSHA found at Scenic Wood Products, a Sugarcreek-based pallet manufacturing facility, according to an OSHA regional news release.

OSHA unearthed the violations during a January inspection of Scenic Wood Products initiated under its Site Specific Targeting Program, which enables OSHA to concentrate its attention on facilities where the highest rates of injuries and illnesses occur. All 20 of the offenses OSHA cited during its inspection were serious violations, including:

  1. Not providing or requiring proper personal protective equipment for workers performing live electrical work or conducting a flash hazard analysis

  2. Failing to have adequate machine guarding and personal protective equipment

  3. Not training workers on electrical safety hazards

  4. Failing to provide fall protection for workers conducting maintenance operations on unguarded platforms and on the roof

“Scenic Wood Productions has a responsibility to recognize the hazards that exist in its workplace and ensure workers are properly trained in the safe operation and maintenance of required equipment,” Deborah Zubaty, OSHA’s area director in Columbus, told the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Public Affairs. “Employers are also responsible for ensuring workers are provided with personal protective equipment to guard against known hazards in the workplace.”
