A construction company in Mississippi may be facing hefty federal fines following an inspection from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), according to BusinessWeek.com. OSHA officials inspected a Brocato Construction Inc. site in April near Jackson and cited violations relating to trenching.
OSHA officials cited Brocato for two willful violations on one serious violation. Inspectors determined that the site lacked safeguards to prevent trench collapses as well as ladders to quickly exit the trench in the event of a cave-in. Trench cave-in hazards are violations taken very seriously by OSHA, because they are so deadly.
“The employer is aware of OSHA’s safety standards with regard to excavation and trenching, but chose to put employees’ lives at risk by having them work in an unprotected trench,” said Clyde Payne, OSHA area director in Jackson.
