A New York-based construction company is facing federal fines for safety violations at a site in Florida, according to Fox News and CBS News in Jacksonville. The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited RCP Services Inc. for nine safety violations after officials inspected the site at a residential apartment complex in Jacksonville. OSHA launched an investigation after an inspector initially noticed employees atop elevated working without proper fall protection.
OSHA also issued citations for employees' lacking proper personal protective equipment, using a damaged extension cord and exposing employees to falling objects. Proposed penalties total $47,000.
“Falls are the leading cause of death for workers in residential construction,” said Brian Sturtecky, OSHA director in Jacksonville. “Employers must take responsibility for ensuring that workers have and wear proper equipment at all times.”
OSHA was particularly focused on fall protection in 2012 at residential construction sites.
