An outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease at a Ohio auto supply store killed one worker and left another seriously ill.
Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease, is a powerful contaminant that is difficult to trace. It often thrives in watery environments, including pools, hot tubs, cooling towers and local water systems. At high temperatures, water that contains legionella can enter the body through the nose or mouth in the form of water vapor.
Managers of AAP, the auto supply store, are not sure where the bacteria originated from, but say that they have sanitized much of the workspace. Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration performed an investigation and took samples from the site. It expects results within a week.
