Managers of smelting plants need to be extra cautious when changing aluminum cylinders, because incredibly harmful chlorine gas can leak out. Recently, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspected Beck Aluminum Alloys after an employee fell seriously ill due to chlorine exposure. OSHA fined the owners of the smelting plant $77,472 for 13 potentially fatal safety violations. Inspectors found that after the gas leakage was indentified, employers made no effort to remove the rest of the workers from the exposed area.
"Employers have a responsibility to provide workers with proper training and to implement procedures that protect employees from chemical hazards in the workplace," said the OSHA area director in Milwaukee. "It's unacceptable that Beck Aluminum Racine failed to develop safety procedures to prevent the release of chlorine gas during maintenance. When a release of chlorine gas occurred, the company failed to remove employees immediately from potential exposure. This can cause severe health issues related to the skin and the respiratory and central nervous systems. Exposure to high concentrations can result in death."
