Indiana Worker Killed in Construction Zone

A construction accident claimed the life of an Indianapolis worker on the morning of April 16, according to WISHTV.com News in Indianapolis. According to officials, the construction employee was working at a site at Allisonville Road and 465 in Indianapolis. Another worker backed over the victim in an excavator, crushing him.

“It was just an unfortunate accident,” said Indiana State Police Officer Ray Poole. No charges have been filed, and police do not expect that to change. The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) may come to inspect the site following the fatal accident.

Although this victim was not killed by a driver, the accident did occur prior to National Work Zone Awareness Week, which runs from April 23-27. Officials hope to bring the risks of highway work zones to the forefront of the public’s mind this week. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is working with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) to coordinate the week.

National Work Zone Awareness Week has grown immensely in the last 10 years, and individual states hold specific events to raise awareness. So remember to be extra cautious in work zones, not only this week, but always.
