Workplace injuries can be costly for both the business and the worker. The injured employee may face long recovery times and substantial medical bills, and workplace productivity may suffer while he is away. If he does not return, the company has to hire and train a new employee, a costly process.
In short, everyone benefits from prevention. For that reason, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) offers Safety Intervention Grants (SIG) to businesses working hard to maintain a safe workplace.
The Fire Department for the city of St. Marys received its $30,000 SIG from the BWC’s administrator, in recognition of its commitment to safety and accident prevention.
The Fire Department covers a 123-mile area in Auglaize County, one of two full-time fire/paramedic institutions in the area. On the paramedic side, first responders often risk the most injury when lifting and moving accident victims.
Loading and unloading patients often causes back and shoulder sprains, crushed fingers, lacerations and other injuries. The city of St. Marys hopes to use the grant to purchase a Power-LOAD cot fastener system, which would automatically lift cots in and out of the ambulance.
The new system does require an investment, but both patients and ambulance workers will be safer for it. The measure will pay for itself if it prevents even one back injury.
