Employee Burnt In Wisconsin Industrial Accident

An employee of Pure Power Technologies suffered severe burns from an electrical arc while working on a 480-volt circuit breaker. The maintenance supervisor was not wearing the necessary protective gear at the time of the accident in the Waukesha, Wisconsin iron foundry. Consequently, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigated Pure Power Technologies and discovered one willful and seven serious safety violations.

“It’s unacceptable that Pure Power Technologies failed to ensure employees were following safe work practices,” said the OSHA area director in Milwaukee. “Employers have a responsibility to take all precautions to protect workers from known hazards that exist in their facilities.”

OSHA found that the company willfully failed to ensure that employees utilized protective equipment when working on circuit breakers. Circuit breakers without covers have a tendency to produce dangerous arcs and flashes. In addition, the company failed to utilize necessary protective coverings, conduct air tests on insulating rubber gloves, inspect machinery periodically and train employees in electrical safety protocols.
