Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, has voluntarily closed two of its major attractions following citations from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA), according to KCAL-TV. Disneyland closed its Space Mountain, Soarin’ Over California and Matterhorn Bobsleds attractions on April 14. The Matterhorn has since reopened.
An incident in November on the Space Mountain ride caught OSHA’s attention when a contract employee was injured while conducting maintenance on the attraction. Disneyland issued a press release assuring the public that rider safety was never in jeopardy. In 2006, Disneyland made an agreement with OSHA to make certain changes to increase employee safety at the park. OSHA cited violations for using unsafe ladders, a lack of guardrails and a lack of fall protection. Proposed penalties total $234,850.
“We constantly strive to maintain a safe work environment for our cast members and contractors—and we are reviewing certain protocols,” said Suzi Brown, a spokeswoman for Disneyland Resorts.
It is good that Disneyland temporarily shut down some its attractions to thoroughly assess the working conditions. Slip and falls are one of the leading worker injuries in the United States and fall protection is an issue that OSHA takes very seriously.
