Timken Co. is facing fines for safety violations at its Ohio facility following a federal inspection, according to the Norwalk Reflector. The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspected the Canton steel mill in June. Timken Co. has a long history with OSHA and is certainly no stranger to fines and violations.
OSHA officials cited the facility for five repeat violations, including a lack of machine guards on belts and rotating parts. Other repeat violations included failure to ensure electrical boxes with unused openings were closed. Similar violations were cited at Timken Co. facilities in 2007, 2009 and 2011. OSHA has fined Timken Co. 27 times in 16 previous inspections. Proposed fines from this inspection total $170,500.
“Timken Co. has a responsibility to recognize safety hazards in its facility and to train workers in emergency response,” says Howard Eberts, OSHA’s area director in Cleveland. “When employers knowingly ignore safety and health requirements, they are unduly placing their workers at risk for illness and injury, and that is unacceptable.”
