The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited A.H. Sturgill Roofing Inc. for two serious safety violations following a worker fatality on August 22, 2012. A 60-year-old temporary worker suffered a heat stroke on a rooftop and died shortly after. OSHA determined that the company did not take precautions to protect workers from the heat.
“Sturgill Roofing has a responsibility to mandate that workers take frequent breaks in the shade and drink plenty of water during adverse heat conditions, which poses a risk of injury or death,” said OSHA’s Bill Wilkerson. “Employers must train their supervisors and workers to recognize the warning signs of heat illness and take appropriate action.”

Tip of the day: If you run a construction company, ensure that the dangers of heat related illness are posted for workers in both English and Spanish. Make sure that all workers know to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water.
