A 21-year-old Noblesville, Indiana man, Anthony J. Brock, was killed at his workplace, IDCastings, an ironworking plant recently.
Early on the morning of November 20, Brock was tasked with fixing a water leak. While using an aerial work platform, his body was caught between a railing and a catwalk, but the machine did not stop moving. After being freed from the mechanism, Brock was rushed to the hospital, where he died. The official cause of death was asphyxia by mechanical compression.
IDCastings has a clean safety record with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), reaching back nearly 15 years without incident. An investigation will take between two and three months to complete, after which IDCastings will be fined if it is shown that the company failed to provide adequate safety measures that could have prevented this loss of life.
Even with a flawless safety record, it is still very important for workers to remain aware of dangers around their workplace. OSHA recommends the following practices to stay safe:
Stay cautious around dangerous substances or moving machines
Report to your employer if you notice inadequate safeguards around machinery or a lack of maintenance
Always wear personal protective equipment where required
