Austin Site Lacks Safety Procedures

Electronic Recycling and Trading Co. in Austin, Texas is facing federal fines for safety violations, according to WorkersCompensation.com. Investigators from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited 14 serious violations, including tagout procedures for energy sources. Proposed fines total $60,060.

Two workers were previously injured at the Austin site after a combustible dust explosion.

“Employers must ensure their workplaces are evaluated for hazards and take corrective action before a dangerous incident such as this occurs,” said Casey Perkins, the OSHA area director in Austin. “Combustible dust hazards can be controlled by implementing multiple safeguards, such as installing proper exhaust ventilation systems.”

Dust collection and a lack of tagout/lockout procedures were among the 14 violations cited.
