A tragic fatal workplace accident left a construction worker dead and a truck driver injured in Cincinnati on January 19, 2015. A highway overpass was set to be demolished, but collapsed before work could be completed. Several tons of concrete and construction equipment rained down onto Interstate 75, pinning and crushing a construction worker. The collapsing debris caught a semi-truck driver off guard, leading to a crash resulting in minor injuries.
It is uncertain what led to the collapse.
Both the injured worker and the family of the deceased worker could be entitled to compensation, for the on-the-job injury and wrongful death, respectively.
Construction jobs are as safe as any other job as long as all workers are performing their jobs correctly, and the company has properly trained its employees and provided the necessary safety gear. Records of the bridge indicate that it was considered “functionally obsolete,” and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has stepped in to investigate.
